Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) had issued 22-page guidelines on uniform laying down protocols covering everything. From fabric and color to names and numbers and size of manufacturers’ logos, the government body specified the finest of details through their guidelines.
Male beach volleyballers are required to wear a tank top and shorts, with FIVB rules stating: “For all athletes the bottom of the shorts must be a minimum of 10 cm above the top of the knee cap.”

As soon as beach volleyball came as an event in Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. The women's uniform at that was a bikini. Thus FIVB allowed shorts in order to accommodate different countries religions and cultural requirements hence the uniforms had to be made flexiable. In the 2016 Games, several athletes choose for the modest choice.
In fact, the uniform guidelines from the FIVB state that shorts are an option, and in 2016, the Egyptian women’s beach volleyball team wore long-sleeved shirts and pants at the games in Rio.
